ABOUT ME: MS. RUIZ

Welcome! On this website you will find an archive of samples of my first year teaching. It is my hopes that through these samples you will get a better idea of the kind of teacher I am and will continue to aspire to become. Through my studies at LMU's School of Education I learned the importance of praxis, implementing educational theory through active practice. Too often, as academics we forget to incorporate the theories we learn in our formal teacher education into real, accessible practice for students.

A little more about me: I was born in Leon, Nicaragua and brought to the U.S. at the age of 2. Although my parents have done an excellent job of allowing me to keep the Nicaraguan culture alive at home, I have also managed to navigate and manage American culture.  I am fluent in Spanish and have a Bilingual credential which allows me to teach Math in both English AND Spanish. Que fantastico, no?

Hawthorne, California is what I consider my hometown. I was raised in this urban city from the age of 2 until the age of 21 when I moved to attend UCLA where I earned my Bachelor Degree in Sociology and a Minor in Education Studies. I knew from early on that I wanted to be a teacher for the traditionally ignored "at risk" youth. Coming from a high school and town where its an expectation for gang violence and a lack of upward mobility to be present, I have a very personal investment in changing the dreary spiral Education in California is taking. I recently earned my Masters Degree and Teaching Credentials at LMU and plan to continue my education by obtaining a Doctor of Education in Urban Schooling, hopefully within the next 5 years.

My passion for Math sprouted in middle school when my Pre-Algebra I teacher understood the importance of student self efficacy and teacher induced student confidence. Her trust in my math ability and my mistake making process catapulted me into seeing first hand the art of teaching. Thank you Ms. Gabrielle Irvin. Along with my fascination for the power of Mathematics comes a strong urgency for social justice. My undergraduate career as a student of Sociology prompted a want to learn as much about society in efforts to try and alleviate the issues our schools are currently facing. I am prepared for a long drawn career as both an educator and eventually, my goal is to become a superintendent of my old high school district.
